What is Form W-8BEN?

Form W-8BEN is used by foreign individuals to certify non-U.S. status to a withholding agent and, when eligible, claim a treaty rate.

Who generally uses it?

An individual who is not a U.S. person and receives certain U.S.-source income may be asked for the form. Companies generally use Form W-8BEN-E.
